The construction of the new theatre building, installation of extensive services and specialist equipment, including Specialist laser and robotic theatre equipment, together with the construction of a new plant room immediately below to support the new Hybrid Theatre development was undertaken within tight deadlines as required by The Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust. The work also necessitated modifications and refurbishment to the areas immediately adjacent to the new theatre and the supporting services installations, including ventilation, air conditioning, IPS and UPS equipment.
Magnolia House
Client: Birmingham Women's & Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Role: Cost Advisor
Project value: £1m
A very high profile and unusual NHS construction project located in the middle of the hospital. An entire bereavement centre was constructed in the almost landlocked garden with every single element of the building passing through a small gate and through a garden that was operational 24/7.
The entire construction site was surrounded by complex operational departments from complex care, to CRF, surgical day care and Heart Investigation. Despite the complexity of the build process and the location of the construction site, not a single infection control incident occurred throughout the entire project. Due to the nature of the facility the Client wanted a non-clinical feel, high specification and sustainable construction. This included feature lighting, underfloor heating, engineered floor finish, feature bulkheads, glazed curtain walling, etc.
